How This Calculation Works

Limescale (calcium carbonate) acts as a thermal insulator. Just 1.6mm of buildup can decrease heat transfer efficiency by up to 12%.

How Limescale Affects Your Energy Bills

Limescale is calcium carbonate that precipitates out of hard water when it is heated. It acts as a thermal insulator — coating heating elements in boilers, kettles, and washing machines and forcing them to consume more energy to reach the same target temperature.

Research from WRc (Water Research Centre) estimates that just 1 mm of limescale on a heating element increases energy consumption by approximately 7%. At 6 mm — typical after several years without descaling — that rises to over 40%. For a gas combi boiler running in a hard-water area, this can translate into £100–£200 of wasted energy per year.

How the Calculator Works

Enter your local water hardness in mg/L — or search for your city to auto-fill the value from our verified database — alongside your current energy tariff. The estimator uses a progressive scaling model to project how much additional energy your appliances consume each month as limescale accumulates, expressed as an annual cost in your local currency.

Hardness above 200 mg/L (classified as "Very Hard" under WHO guidelines) typically shows the greatest return from descaling treatments or water softener installation. The calculator will indicate when preventative action is financially worthwhile based on your inputs.
